OA INITIATIVE:
COCO MERMAID & EDUCATION OUTREACH:Despite having grown up in landlocked Iowa, Emily has cultivated a love and curiosity for Earth's oceans and seas. Five years ago, Emily dove into the world of mermaids. Her fascination began when she saw YouTube videos of other self started mermaids like Hannah Fraser, Raina the Halifax Mermaid, and Mermaid Kariel. In 2015, Emily received her first silicone mermaid tail created by none other than Eric Ducharme. Working as an Ocean Ambassador, Emily fuses her passion with a purpose by inspiring inland communities to be more conscious about their impacts on our oceans. Most of her work consists of educating and entertaining for children's birthday parties, however, she is also available for other small events such as socials, assemblies, and fundraisers. For more info about Emily and her work, please visit emilymermaid.com.

OA INITIATIVE: OCEAN CONSERVATION WEBSITE “SEAOFWONDERS.COM”, CREATING SEA LIFE INFOCARDS, OUTREACH WITH ELEMENTARY STUDENTS - Giuliana grew up in Switzerland, where she graduated with a PhD degree in Environmental Science. Now she works at CIRES and NOAA in Boulder, where she uses climate models to investigate the biogeochemistry of coastal upwelling regions. Despite having lived in mountainous, landlocked places all her life, she feels a special connection with and love for the ocean. She is a passionate scuba diver and has an affinity for manta rays and sharks. When she’s not dreaming about her next diving trip, she can be found swing dancing and practicing yoga, as well as snowboarding, skiing and hiking in Colorado’s beautiful outdoors. Giuliana is in the process of designing sea life infocards to raise awareness in the dive industry about the plight of various ocean species, and has created the website “seaofwonders.com”, through which she hopes to inspire people to become more active ocean advocates themselves. She is also currently doing an outreach and communications internship at Ocean First Institute and is excited to share her love for the ocean with children of various ages.

OA INITIATIVE:
ZERO WASTE PROGRAMMING AND ZERO WASTE PRODUCT FUNDRAISING:24 year old future scientist, interested in clean oceans and living a sustainable, plastic free life!A couple years into my environmental degree, I watched No Impact Man and it sparked an interest in reducing my waste and impact on the earth. I had already stopped eating meat and fish after learning all about the food industry in my first year (that was a shocker, why don’t they teach this stuff in high school?). I spent the last couple of years focusing on marine biology which showed me the impact of our waste on the oceans, and it frustrates me that not much is being done to prevent this. I think the only way to prevent plastic from getting into our oceans is to stop it at the source – by trying to not purchase and dispose of any plastic. After reading every single zero waste blog I could find I was inspired to start actually trying this myself. It really comes as a shock when you think of yourself as an environmentalist your whole life and then realize that you are not living like one at all. So I’m making a change! However, I am on a mission to try to find the easiest ways to go zero waste, since I believe that is the only way to get most people (especially lazy americans) on board. So, I am not a perfect zero waster. My goal is to do the best that I can while living as close to “normal” as possible with as little inconvenience as I can manage. So if that sounds up your alley, read on!I currently live in Denver, but a lot of my posts are about back home in Boston, MA. Hope you enjoy following along my adventures through the mountains trying to rid the world of disposable plastics.Save the fish!
