Making WAVES 2011

Dr. Sylvia Earle and Vicki Nichols Goldstein, Executive Director of Colorado Ocean Coalition

COCO celebrated its one-year anniversary in November 2011 by hosting Making WAVES in Colorado, a free ocean symposium, that brought together ocean scientists and activists, artists, educators and interested members of the community to learn about oceans. Presenters included: Dr. Sylvia Earle, National Geographic Explorer in Residence; Jim Toomey, cartoonist of the syndicated comic strip Sherman’s Lagoon; David Helvarg, Executive Director of Blue Frontier Campaign and author of 50 Ways to Save the Ocean; Dan Basta, Director of NOAA’s National Marine Sanctuary Program; Margo Pellegrino, paddler and ocean activist; and many others. Over 600 people attended the symposium at the Boulder Public Library and/or the evening fundraiser. According to Helvarg, “It may have been the most significant ocean event to take place in the Rockies in the last 30 million years.”
